Soju (a distilled spirit) and Makgeolli (a brewed rice wine) are Koreas most beloved alcoholic drinks. These days its rare to find true artisan brewers and distillers as most Soju and Makgeolli is produced in large factories. This 3-hour small group tour will introduce you to some modern master artisans who brew and distill according to the time-honored (and time-consuming) methods. You will learn about the entire process of turning rice into Soju, followed by a home-made Korean meal washed down with bowls of Makgeolli.
Meet your guide at Anguk station where your tour departs. Together, you will walk to the Soju workshop location where you will meet your brew master. Designated as a ‘Human National Treasure’ by Seoul Metropolitan City, he is the successor of a family secret recipe that has been passed down from 10 generations.
Surrounded by large jars of Makgeolli, the brew master will pour guests drink after drink, explaining the history, the distillation process by which each drink is made, and the differences in alcohol content. Enjoy tasting Makgeolli, Yakju and artisan Soju while learning from an informative master with a great sense of humor.
After drinking, you will walk to a restaurant that is located in a small alley off the main Insadong street. Here, you will enjoy a hearty traditional Korean dinner that includes Bossam (boiled pork belly), Jeon (pancakes) as well as Doenjang Jjigae (a Korean soybean paste stew). You will also try various Korean side dishes, also referred to as Banchan, while drinking Makgeolli. Your guide will explain the difference in taste between the two masters’ brews.
After dinner, your guide will accompany you back to Anguk station.
